Calendar of the beatification process

  • 3 November 1984 – funeral of Father Jerzy Popiełuszko.
  • 24 June 1995 – Primate Józef Glemp appoints Commission for Preparing Beatification Process of Father Jerzy Popiełuszko.
  • 15 November 1996 – the Congregation for the Causes of Saint grants consent to the formal commencement of the beatification process.
  • 8 February 1997 – solemn commencement of the diocese stage of the beatification process in Saint Stanisław Kostka’s church in Warsaw.
  • 8 February 2001 – 53rd and last session of the Beatification Tribunal: handing over process files to Cardinal Glemp, end of the diocese stage for the beatification process.
  • 21 March 2001 – process files are handed over to the general postulator of the cause – Father Zbigniew Kiernikowski.
  • 3 May 2001 – prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saint – Cardinal Jose Saraiva Martins – breaks the seal of the documentation sent from Poland – commencement of the Romanian stage of the beatification process.
  • 8 September 2002 – Father Tomasz Kaczmarek becomes a general postulator of the cause.
  • 15 October 2008 – Archbishop Kazimierz Nycz presents Positio super martyrio to Pope Benedict XVI, which was earlier handed over to Archbishop Angelo Amato, the prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saint – commencement of the third stage of the beatification process.
  • 19 December 2009 – Pope Benedict XVI signs a beatification decree of Fr. Popiełuszko as a martyr for the faith.
  • 6 June 2010– Archbishop Angelo Amato the papal legate presides over the beatification ceremonies at Piłsudski Square in Warsaw.
