Account of Dariusz Śpiewak

My father, who knew Father Jerzy from earlier times, took me to him. My aunt at this time was in a group of women looking after the cross next to the church and helped to contact Fr. Jerzy. We met in May. I was not a tradesman, but I had served in the army, and joined the group assigned to protect Father Jerzy. Many of those friendships are still current to this day. I was proud to be in a group of his closest friends. We travelled to Częstochowa and for masses in different cities many times. We protected him so that he would come to no harm, a spontaneous protection. We wanted the SB (the secret police in communist Poland) to know that he was not alone. People often warned us to be careful because the SB were always scheming and spying, also arranging various (this or that) traps. This work became my life.
