Account of Adam Nowosad

Adam Nowosad – a friend and a former member of the group protecting Fr. Jerzy Popiełuszko. The group worked the closest to Fr. Jerzy and watched over him day by day, e.g. when he was travelling or during the meetings with people in Fr. Popiełuszko’s apartment.

Account of Adam Nowosad

Despite his poor health condition caused by a fever, he prepared a pretty fiery sermon on topics related to current events. He was going to Bydgoszcz, aware that he was leaving his friends, to fulfil a set obligation he promised to the local priests. After arriving he told of a telephone call from the Curia and that he could not deliver the sermon. It caused consternation. Father Jerzy was embarrassed and he said: well, maybe after the mass, I will meet with people who want to meet me. After the Mass, the rosary was initiated by him, as a part of a contact with people, who greeted him with huge applause. This is the famous Bydgoszcz rosary, which he recited from the bottom of his heart. I say that this is his personal testament. Although there are many publications about him, more than 140 books, master thesis, doctoral dissertations, which are very important, but, Bydgoszcz's testament and rosary, has become lost in those publications.
There was a time in his life when Father Jerzy, was really afraid, afraid that he exposed people to danger. It was true, one could notice that he was stressed and tired of everything around him. He took one month in the mountains, at Jaszczurówka, staying in the Pope's apartment. Believe me, from that moment, he became a completely different person. The night he spent in the room that the Pope had previously occupied changed him forever. He became free, devoid of stress, no more fear, and now understood that if he had been an instrument in the hands of God he wouldn't have been afraid of anything. He came back completely refreshed, joyful, impetuous, he smiled more and from this moment he was ready for martyrdom, what was to become his destiny. In that Papal room he found the Holy Spirit who led him through the worst moments of his life.
When I met him on his return from Jaszczurówka, he was the same man whom I had met during his earlier times. He was curious about what was happening here and there, happy, spontaneous, impetuous. He liked to relax by playing the game 'thousand' and you could see his joy. When SB set up the acts of provocation, the situation depressed him. One such case, of the anonymous letter concerning Father Bogucki. He tried to comfort depressed Father Bogucki. Sometimes an obliging person was coming and saying that he knew someone near to him that was an agent. Often they were false messages. He told us he did not want to hear about such cases. He realised they were slanderous, destructive actions. He focused on the issue that he wanted to implement, which was the construction of a new Poland. He wanted to prepare us for different Poland. He believed that communism would collapse sooner or later and was important to prepare for the new alternative. He believed that communism would not disappear immediately, it was impossible. The Communists would not leave Poland. Communism would change and transform. Communists would reorganize, continue their actions for which we should prepare. His idea to appoint a Working University, to teach Solidarity activists catholic social theory, this lasted for a year. We had classes in the lower church. It made sense and was going very well but someone decided that we were no longer allowed and it finished.
Why was Father Jerzy so inconvenient? Whenever he appeared he integrated people, something began to happen, and everywhere an active and loud crowd gathered around him. The other priests did not approve that either. He shattered peace that prevailed there before. It was not convenient. I later found out it was major reason why he could not stay in one place for long. With one exception, when he met Fr. Bogucki. He found the divine spark in Fr. Jerzy and it is due to his care all that happened later. It caused the revelation of Father Jerzy’s holiness and Fr. Bogucki took a great part in this occurrence.
