27th anniversary of the martyrous death of Father Jerzy Popiełuszko - Warsaw, 19 October 2011

27 years ago in the town of Górsk at the way from Bydgoszcz to Toruń officers of the Department IV of Ministry of Internal Affairs, abducted and then savagely murdered Father Jerzy Popiełuszko - Catholic priest and social activist called the chaplain of the "Solidarity", who was beatified on 6 June 2010.

The murder of Father Jerzy Popiełuszko caused an enormous shock in the Polish society, and a widespread outrage at home and abroad. The funeral, which took place on 3 November 1984 in the St. Stanislaw Kostka Church in Warsaw (Father Jerzy’s last parish), gathered tens of thousands of people and was an occasion to manifest opposition to the brutal methods used by the authorities and the apparatus of repression.

From the very beginning of its existence the Institute of National Remembrance, carries out work which aims at not only identifying all the perpetrators and the circumstances of the crime, but also commemorating Father Popiełuszko and his ministry. On 19 October 2011 at the 27th anniversary of the martyrous death, dr. Łukasz Kamiński the President of the Institute of National Remembrance laid flowers at the grave of the Blessed Father Jerzy Popiełuszko.
